Don Julio vs Patrón: Comparing Mexico’s Icon Tequilas

Don Julio was founded in 1942 by Don Julio González, one of the pioneers of small-batch, slow-cooked, premium tequila production at a time when the category was still dominated by cheaper, mixto-style tequilas cut with non-agave sugars. His name became synonymous with the shift toward 100% agave, sipping-quality tequila.

Patrón launched much later, in 1989, but rapidly built a reputation for hand-crafted, small-batch production and, crucially, extremely effective premium branding — the brand’s distinctive hand-blown bottle and marketing helped define what “luxury tequila” looked like to an entire generation of drinkers outside Mexico.

On production, both houses use 100% blue Weber agave and traditional brick oven or autoclave cooking methods, but their top-tier releases diverge: Don Julio’s 1942 and Ultima Reserva expressions lean into extended solera-style aging and wine cask finishing, while Patrón’s Gran Patrón Burdeos is explicitly finished in Bordeaux wine barrels, both chasing a richer, more whisky-adjacent flavour profile at the top of their ranges.

For everyday drinking, both brands’ blanco and reposado expressions are excellent, reliable choices; the real differentiation happens at the top of each range, where cask finishing, aging length, and presentation become the deciding factors for collectors rather than everyday drinkers.
