Champagne vs Sparkling Wine vs Port: What’s the Difference?

Champagne is a legally protected name that can only be used for sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France, using the traditional method (méthode champenoise), where a wine’s second fermentation — the one that creates the bubbles — happens inside the very bottle it’s sold in, followed by a lengthy aging process on the spent yeast lees.

Sparkling wine made anywhere else, even using the identical traditional method, must use a different name — Crémant in other regions of France, Cava in Spain, or simply “sparkling wine” or “method traditionelle” in Australia. Prosecco, by contrast, is typically made using the tank method, where the second fermentation happens in large pressurised tanks rather than individual bottles, producing a fruitier, less yeasty, generally more affordable style.

Port is an entirely different category: a fortified wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley, where a neutral grape spirit is added partway through fermentation, killing the yeast before all the sugar converts to alcohol. That’s what gives Port its sweetness and higher alcohol content (typically around 19-20%) compared to standard wine.

Vintage Port, made only in exceptional years and bottle-aged for decades, is considered one of the world’s great cellaring wines, alongside Champagne’s own prestige cuvées — both categories reward patience in a way most still table wine simply doesn’t.
